Why It’s More Important Than Ever to “Pack Your Patience” When Traveling Abroad

Travel is one of the most beautiful gifts we can give ourselves. It expands our world, introduces us to new cultures, and often becomes the setting for our most treasured memories. But as the world becomes more connected—and let’s be honest, sometimes more complicated—it’s just as important to prepare our mindset as it is to pack our suitcase.
This week, I’ve had three separate clients encounter unusually cold or even rude behavior while traveling internationally. One incident, in particular, struck a chord with me.
A client, ready to head home after an incredible trip, was at the airport checking in for their flight. A supervisor at the check-in counter asked to see proof that the ticket had been paid for—something most travelers wouldn’t expect to need after receiving their confirmation weeks in advance. When the client (rightfully confused) asked why this was needed, the staff member curtly replied, “We’re allowed to ask for anything we’d like.” When the client then asked about customer service, the response was, “Not to Americans. We are not in America.”
Ouch.
Now, is this common? Thankfully, no. But in today’s global climate, it’s not isolated either.
The truth is, traveling as an American today carries a bit more emotional baggage than it used to. Political tensions, media perceptions, and cultural misunderstandings can sometimes make travelers feel unwelcome or unfairly scrutinized.
So what can we do? We prepare.
We educate and empower our travelers to understand that not every country views service through the same lens. That not every staff member they encounter will smile warmly or accommodate their every request. And that while most people they meet abroad will be kind, helpful, and welcoming—there may be moments where patience becomes the most important thing they’ve packed.
Here are a few ways to help ensure smoother, more mindful travels:
Keep printed confirmations, receipts, and identification easily accessible. Even if you don’t think you’ll need them.
Expect different cultural norms around service. What feels “rude” in one place may simply be standard elsewhere.
Respond to tension with calmness. A composed traveler tends to get further, even in frustrating situations.
Avoid confrontation, seek understanding. You’re not just visiting a new place—you’re representing yours, too.
At The Agency Chic, our mission has always been to help travelers feel prepared, confident, and excited about the world waiting for them. That doesn’t mean glossing over the potential challenges—it means facing them together, with honesty and grace.
So next time you prepare to go abroad, yes—double-check your passport, pack your sunscreen, and bring your travel pillow. But most of all, pack your patience and perspective.
The world is still worth exploring. And you're exactly the kind of traveler it needs.
