What Are Synchronous Fireflies?

Synchronous fireflies (Photinus carolinus) are a rare species of lightning bugs that synchronize their flashes in unison during mating season. This unique phenomenon is most commonly observed in Great Smoky Mountains and Congaree National Parks between late May and early June. Unlike other fireflies that flash randomly, these fireflies light up in waves, creating a mesmerizing display of natural rhythm and beauty. The show typically lasts for about two weeks, and the exact timing can vary depending on weather conditions and temperature.

Twinkling Wonders in the Smokies

Deep in Great Smoky Mountain National Park, in late May and early June, the Elkmont area becomes a stage for a natural performance like no other. The park is home to approximately 19 different species of fireflies, including the famous synchronous fireflies. Because it’s such a popular event, though, the park holds a parking pass lottery each year. The lottery opens in late April, and if you win, you’ll be able to park and take a shuttle to the viewing area for one of the magical nights in early June.

Nearby Towns to Explore:

  • Gatlinburg, TN: Just a quick 15-minute drive from Elkmont, Gatlinburg is the perfect base for your trip. Take a ride on the Gatlinburg SkyLift for amazing views, or check out the charming shops and restaurants before the fireflies light up the night.

  • Pigeon Forge, TN: About 30 minutes away, Pigeon Forge offers tons of fun, from Dollywood to unique attractions and dining, making it an awesome spot to stay with family.

A Glowing Forest in South Carolina

If you’re looking for a quieter experience, the synchronous fireflies at Congaree National Park offer an equally stunning, but more serene, light show. The fireflies here flash in unison just like in the Smokies, but the experience tends to be a bit more intimate, with fewer crowds. The show happens on the Firefly Trail, near the Harry Hampton Visitor Center, from mid-May to early June. To manage demand, Congaree also uses a lottery system for reservations. We will be sure to enter your as soon as it open to help in securing your spot for this breathtaking show.

Nearby Towns to Explore:

  • Columbia, SC: Only 30 minutes from Congaree, Columbia is a lively city full of activities. Explore the Riverbanks Zoo, or take a peaceful stroll along the Congaree Riverwalk before heading to the firefly event.

  • Cayce, SC: A quieter town, Cayce is ideal if you want a more laid-back spot to grab a meal and enjoy the nearby Cayce Riverwalk Park before your firefly adventure.

Tips for Your Firefly Adventure

  • Get comfy: Bring a blanket or some camp chairs to relax while you enjoy the light show.

  • Arrive early: Both events draw plenty of visitors, so give yourself time to get settled before sunset.

  • Bring a red-filter flashlight: It’ll help you see without disturbing the fireflies or other people watching.

  • Photography: Capturing fireflies can be tricky! If you’re interested in photography, bring a tripod and practice with long exposure settings to capture their magical glow.
